A Young Woman Says 'No' to Rural India's Child-Marriage Tradition
Posted by Andrew Bissell on 9/06, 8:52pm
From The Washington Post [free registration required] comes the story of Savita Chaudhry, an heroic young woman in India who has rejected her "marriage," arranged when she was three years old, to an Indian boy who was five at the time. In so doing, she risks ostracism and expulsion from her caste.

There's something so heroic about her posture in the photograph. Of course, seeing her surrounded by the cornucopia of goods in the grocery store she runs puts a smile on a capitalist face like mine. And it certainly helps that she's a babe.

I thought this sentence was of particular interest:

The young woman's dilemma shows the enduring power of India's caste system -- the rigid social hierarchy that is integral to the Hindu faith -- even in the face of modernizing forces such as globalization and rapid economic growth.

In other words, global capitalism and modernization are helping to give Indian women the courage to stand against oppressive traditions that have been entrenched for thousands of years. Let the liberals -- who so often feign concern for equality between the sexes -- put that in their pipes and smoke them!
