| The ruling council of the Irish Republican Army terrorist organisation has released a public statement ordering all their terrorist cells ("armed units") to put down their weapons and permanently end terrorist activity at 4pm UK time today (in a little over three hours time) and devote themselves to helping bring about a peaceful resolution to the status of Northern Ireland. The British, Irish and US governments have all long pressed for terrorist disarmament. While certain elements of the peace process (such as the early release of terrorist convicts) seem dubious, I think today's developments should be cautiously welcomed. | ||
