Oil Painting 24Oil Painting 24
Alexei L. Antonov

An ornamented teapot stands in the center, in front of a pure white curtain, ornamented with leaves and exhibiting folds that can compete in detail with those of any real curtain. On a polished wooden table stands a porcelain cup, along with fruits. Objects pertaining to consumption of tea are prevalent in Antonov's still life, depicting a legacy of Western culture quite widespread in Russia and families of Russian descent to this day. Tea is the "ubiquitous gentleman's drink;" it is comforting, dignified, and accessible simultaneously. And its pertinent utensils render themselves open, in their ample variety, to artful and detailed depiction.
