Ahhh.

Mae West (if you're familiar with her) was invoking something akin to irony. She obviously isn't connecting erring with any actual crime but perhaps a closeted biblical or conservative view of "proper" behaviour. Therefore, to err is to do something that although it may be frowned upon nevertheless involves enjoyment and no harm.

A similar thing would be to ask: Is sex dirty? And then to receive the answer: yes, if you do it correctly ;-)
