This was one of the first things I figured out, when I read Rand, loved what she wrote - and discovered she was an atheist [at a time when I was very much not], was horrified, yet was intrigued to wonder why...  it was a breath of fresh air, liberating me from shackles I had not consciously known I had put on...

For the most part -- you either believe in life or you believe in "god." Not both. You believe in reality or you believe in god -- not both. You believe in yourself or you believe in god -- not both. You believe in your own pleasure and happiness or you believe in god -- not both.

"God" is the great slayer of all hopes, dreams, art, poetry, romance, love, vivacity, dynamism, heroism -- and every millimeter of true spirituality. God is the utter murderer of the transcendent and the sublime.

If there really is a god up there somewhere -- which isn't very likely -- rest assured that he really hates it when you believe in him and follow him. He's currently hiding out quite deftly and efficaciously, and he does not want your faith and loyalty. He wants you to believe in, live for, and adhere to, everything delineated above. If you don't -- god may see to it that you burn in hell, as such traitors probably deserve.

What is it with some Objectivists and the instant judgement based on paltry evidence?  Judging from this quote, and others I've read, Rand has a very narrow whitebread notion of what "god" means.  A lot of the more philosophically inclined among us have spent a lifetime grappling with the possible meanings of that there word.  You'd think Ayn would have met and talked with a few.  But Ayn is here to say that if you credit the word with any meaning at all then you hate life and a bunch of O'ist line up to give their approval.

"God — whatever anyone chooses to call God — is one's highest conception of the highest possible."

According to whom?  I know Ayn wants to make a splash with these pronouncements, but half the time she just comes across as a bad listener or worse: it's not just that she doesn't care what anyone else means by the words they choose, she's more than happy to tell them what they were thinking in the first place.

It is odd that you have difficulty with that, Kevin - by the nature of the notion, that it is to be the greatest there can be [StAnselm]... so, by accepting that - believing in that- one is positing something greater than one's own life, which is, by its nature, an insulting and anti-life attitude, since any living organism's own life is its prime value...

Kevin. You asked, "according to who?" The answer to that is quite simple; "ACCORDING TO YOU in regard to you and your life". It is the same for everyone.

One thing I do agree with is that as long as anyone remains alive who believes in God, and regards himself subservient to, God, then God will continue to exist.

I have a favorite question for you to consider. I posit it every now and again when I feel it necessary. It is, fundamentally, a Chicken-or-the-Egg question: "Did God create man or, DID MAN CREATE GOD?"!!!

I don't negate or argue against the intent of any moral codes found in the world's religions--just the DOGMA.

A lot of the more philosophically inclined among us have spent a lifetime grappling with the possible meanings of that there word.
And this is why philosophy is in such shambles, because the 'philosophically inclined' have been running rampant with it.  The reason you have been 'grappling' is because there is not a non-contradictory meaning that you can come up with-at least not one that has any meaning at all.  Ayn Rand did not need to spend a 'lifetime grappling' in order to arrive at the conclusion that ANY notion of god is a vacuous and ridiculous one.  However, if one is 'philosophically inclined' it may take awhile to arrive at this conclusion.
