This is a monstrous story!

Everyone I come into contact with at work praises the economic reforms in China and believes that we will never have to face them in battle. This story is a grim reminder that China is still a potential foe, getting stronger by the day because of commerce with the West, the beginnings of a free market, and the generous dose of weapons technology they obtained during the Clinton administration.

Thanks, Adam, for the heads-up on the totalitarian policies of China. And let's remember to keep our military strong and ready.

Wow, that's pretty horrible. I'm glad I'm making the move over to Google ... any idea if they've pulled stunts of a similar nature?

It's just showing that a state with a all-encompasing communism and a free-market is the most dangerous combination alive.

While all the Western socialist governments have economically problems and will decline because of them. China has a thriving industry and a Communist system that takes full advantages of the dirty parts. It might be a bit like the Roman Empire.

My sense is that, by and large, American business people will do business with anybody if the price is right. Organized criminals and ghetto thugs are treated like heroes in our own country. The prez of China is probably a step up. The American flag doesn't mean that much to bizness people and it hasn't for a long time. Pragmatism, baby. Anything goes. American ideals be damned.

But how to stop things like this?

I consider it not just abhorrent but absolutely shameful when American companies participate in anti-humanistic policies of other governments. China's "great firewall" being a perfect example. However, my opinion of their actions as being evil doesn't really change the fact that they *CAN* do these things whether I like it or not, and that they make buckets of money in doing so. China's paying very well to see American businesses help strip people of their human rights.

The thing is, I can't imagine any cure to this problem which isn't far worse than the disease. I almost feel like we'd have to go about it backwards - work on China so that they'd no longer employ Yahoo in such ways.

Any ideas?

Yahoo accounts in China do go by rules different from their U.S. counterparts. While I visited China last year, I logged onto my Yahoo account which took forever because it was a U.S. account. I remember being prompted to download my account information to local Yahoo to make it faster, but there were some fine print stating my account would then be subject to local rules. I can't recall the exact wording but it made me wary enough to stick to my slow connection.

Gmail is way better and has a full Chinese interface even for the U.S. accounts. Not sure about their account agreements with China though.

C{h}i[n]e[s]e   e-m-a-i-l systems never permitted some words (or more properly, phrases) in any context. So many people found their "normal" words been blo*c*k*e*d when they use domestic e*m*a*i*ls. For example, "Canadian Judge" is one of the "ke_y wo_rd", because the sound of that word in   C{h}i{n}e{s}e  contains the syllables "d____a     F___a", which has the same pronunciation as that in "f------------a   l--------u--------n    d_______a   f________a". "Methodology" is another "k_ey wo_r_d" because the pronunciation of its C{h}i[n]e[s]e counterpart "fang   f--------a    l---------u-------n" also contains "f----------a l----u_________n". This makes C{h}i[n]e[s]e e*m*a*i*l   systems so notorious that many people do not use them.
