It looksvery beautiful, Andrew. Do you know if anything has been done about the horrible idea for a bash-America site?

Looks great. Now if they could just put a couple of gun turrets up on the top....

Barbara,

Aside from the fine op-ed in The Wall Street Journal that first exposed the dastardly plans for the memorial, there have been some scattered letter-writing campaigns organized by a few different blogs. I haven't heard any official announcements, but I think that op-ed probably caught the attention of some higher-ups.

There are pictures and a slide show at http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/29/nyregion/29cnd-tower.html . The new design is stunning, with no trace of Liebeskind's fashionable post-modernism. David Childs joins the ranks of the world's top architects, and I am hoping to see more from him in the future.

Brilliant.

Thanks Adam for the link and Andrew for the heads-up.

I love this design. The rising dramatic diagonal lines and its so elegant and simple looking and, yet, unique. A worthy follow up to the stature of the Twin Towers—makes me want to live in New York and see it’s development.

Indeed, it seems so obvious, one wonders why it was not proposed before...

Thanks Adam for the link, haven't been to the NYT's website in a while.

All I have to say is its about damn time. And they designed that in a month, yeah right. They knew the first one would be controversal so they had backup plans. Now if they would only build a second tower next to it...

Also, its hard to tell cause the cgi is pretty good here but what about the other buildings of the Center? How are they going to be rebuilt if at all?

My thanks too, and my hits on the check mark. I'm glad they scrapped that horrible first design. Wish this one was taller than the old WTCs.

It's great that collectivist architect Liebeskind's plan lost out to corporate architect Child's. Even if it was unintentionally due to safety concerns. The only thing that survived of Liebeskind's plan is the height of the building.

Here is another article about it from the Telegraph:

Well, at least Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the bad boys of American architecture, have it. SOM, originators of Lever House (NY), the John Hancock Center (Big John to his friends :-))& Sears Tower (Chicago) and lately the Time-Warner Center (NYC), know how to build big.

Hot stuff. Strong, broad, go-fuck-yourself stuff.

Make Freedom Tower gunmetal grey and I'm hard as nails.

Delightful new design … now I don’t have to leave New York City.

We still have to stop the desecration of the memorial. Gov. Pataki has expressed concern but it is far from what is needed. The New York Post has demanded more (ref) in a strongly worded editorial.
