I have got the C=hi=ne=se edition of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. I used to be very cautious of and have an antipathy to the "translator's pref_aces" of the translated literature. In China, the authority is very afraid of the "shakes" of people who are reading the literature which shows little respect for M.a.r.x.ism. In every translated book the translators always add their own pref_aces which warn people to be "cautious" about any objection to M.a.r.x.ism or orthodox C=hi=ne=se "spirit", and order us to use the" M.a.r.x.ist perspective" to "see through" the "rubbish " in the translated literature. If the " rubbish " were not so many, the translator would just say that "The author said that M.a.r.x.ism is not predictable, this is absolutely a f_allacy." Or, "There are a few critiques of M.a.r.x.ism, please be cautious of them." Or," Our culture are different from the Western, so do not blind imitate it. " But if the whole book shows no respect to M.a.r.x.ism, the translator always presents a lengthy dissertation-like "thesis" and systematically "analyses" the "f_allacies" in this book, meanwhile mingled with many vilifications and warnings. Because I have "shaken" for many years, I take these "translator's pref_aces" as lousy mad talks. So I always tear off the vaccine-like pref_aces lest I throw up. Ayn Rand is an " obstinate" opponents of co.mm.un.ism, there should be a lengthy "translator's pref_aces" before the text, but there is not. This is indeed a miracle.

femino, I'm curious: Is fiction not viewed as threatening (hence no prefaces, no banning?) in the way non-fiction is?

For example, is George Orwell available in your country...particularly his anti-totalitarian fiction, "1984" and "Animal Farm"?

You know in thinking about The Fountainhead, the criticisms of Communism take some level of understanding to find.  Not much, but I don't see it overtly attacked as a political system.  That may be why it slipped under the radar.

1984 and Animal F_arm  both can be found in Ch_in_a and they are very f_amous to Ch=ine=se people. I don't think the gov doesn't think fictions a threat any more. But it's control over these "offensive" books becomes less and less efficient. Many people know how to attack the gov by innuendo. Furthermore, the pirating market and second-hand book market are basically out of their control. I have bought some more "offensive" in this kind of markets. The complete bankrupt of Ma_rx_ism makes this possible.
