I'm not a sanction whore and do not let my comments be dictated by the possibility of santions, but I have noticed one thing:  I've never gotten a 'sanction' email that was less than 4 or greater than 5.  Are sanctions much like the energy level of the electron in that they can only exists in certain discreet quanta?  Why don't I ever see an email that says '1' santion was given to you by a like-minded asshole.  Why always '4' or '5'?  Have others seen this same pattern?

The number of Atlas points you get from a sanction depends on the number of Atlas thingies of the sanctioner +1. A person with no Atlas thingies gives one Atlas point, one Atlas thingy gives two Atlas points, etc.

Quick question about sanctions:

Does SOLO management have (and if so, does it exercise) the ability to examine who sanctions whom?

Now this is just getting silly. I'd expect Michael to sanction something like this ( ;) ), but who the heck else?!

Liar. It was a four Atlas thingy person. Seems you're attempting to create a conspiracy of misinformation. Tin foil hat time.

Pete,

In order to prevent multiple sanctions for a particular post, each account does hold info on who they've sanctioned.  So in theory, it is available.  We don't actually examine the data, or even have a convenient way to do so.  We don't even have an inconvenient way to do so.  At best, if we wanted to know if someone had sanctioned a particular item, we could check that.  But otherwise it's a needle in a haystack.  If we felt the need, we could probably come up with a mechanism to sort the data.  Any particular reason for asking?

I've gotten 2 sanctions, also 4 and 5. I can often figure out who gave me a 4 and usually a 5. I think I've gotten 3 sanction votes. What I'd like to know is how private is SOLO mail? I don't think anyone is reading it who shouldn't, but could someone? What SOLO needs more than anything is having the mail function ungraded so we can send copies to ourselves and retain copies of sent mail here on SOLO, etc. Mechanically speaking, that would strengthen this forum more than anything I can think of. I do get the impression that its software is pretty rigid, at least insofar as the owners' ability or propensity to manipulate it.

Joe,

I was mainly just curious as to how and if sanction data could be put to use (my suspicion is that it isn't!).  It's just that there have been some heated exchanges on SOLO during my time, some to the point of friendships ending and people leaving the site.  If they become nasty personal attacks, I generally don't like to make posts in that environment, but human nature leads me to follow the conflict.  In some cases the players involved in these disputes are SOLO management (and its strongest allies) on one side versus some other individual or group of individuals on the other.  Most of the time I find myself in agreement with the SOLO side of the coin.  However, I have sanctioned a few posts here and there that would probably have irked the site owners, and have sometimes wondered in the back of my mind if that would register me on some sort of a private "shit list".  Again, if I were a betting man, I would bet that such secret thought policing is of no interest to the owners and designers of the site, and even if it were, nothing would stop me from speaking my mind through posts and sanctions.  It was just a thought that came to on the subject of sanctions.   Personally, you could do away with the whole system and it wouldn't have any effect on me one way or the other.

Brant, just like the rest of the data, the webmasters have access to it in an indirect way.  But again, it's encoded and difficult to access.  And it would be a violation of privacy.  So nobody reads them.

Pete, we don't have a shit list based on sanctions.  :)

The number of sanctions you can give is just one more than the number of your Atlas statues. I've received "1" sanctions before ... in fact, several for my posting of the "Dicks, Pussies, and Assholes" speech from Team America that had many up-in-arms, and set a new record for the number of asterisks used by Reginald Firehammer to maintain some rather 'retentive' standards of decency over at SoloRejects.com.

What I'm wondering is, is it possible to get a fifth Atlas? We've seen it happen on just a couple of occasions with articles, leads me to believe you might get a fifth at some ungodly level of sanctions, say 7000 or more.

6250, actually.  There's a couple people that I know of that are close to the 5 Atlas point level.  Level 6 will be the the real challenge!

If you get 100 Atlases you'll be able to shrug. I intend to be in my spaceship at that point on my way to my new home in another Galaxy far, far away.:-)

Brant,

This miracle of hair is mine to own and keep, and mine to guard, and mine to use, and mine to kneel before!

I do not surrender my treasures, nor do I share them .... I guard my treasures: my thought, my will, my hairline. And the greatest of these is my hairline.

Andrew, I see potential for recession. Perhaps you should petition Greenspan for liquidity to deal with your upcoming midlife crisis. Oh, Btw, if you're kneeling before your hair it must be a hairpiece!
