This is an outstanding, scholarly work. May we have more in the future, Jonathan?

Very thorough and well argued!

Sometimes, it is easy for us to become complacent in the simple, though true, argument against such evils: initiated coercion is immoral. While that's easy for an Objectivist to grasp, the rest of the world needs their hands held and needs to see every argument for such evil dismantled, torn down, and shown for the man-hating garbage it is. It all boils down to man's life being sacrosanct, but for a world confused and lied to by muddled, incoherent, and deceitful pseudo-philosophy, thorough argument is invaluable.

Thanks for providing us this excellent and complete argument against conscription. May those of us eligible for the draft (like myself) never be forced to be criminals by the very government whose job it is to protect us.

Wow, thanks guys for such praise -- especially you Barbara. What a privilege from the author of The Passion of Ayn Rand!

I don't think my essay is "brilliant," though. Its most conspicous shortcomming is that it's anticlimatic; I begin by equating conscription with Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia and Communist China. Instead, I should integrate the individual rights stuff into the give-and-take of the essay.

Sam: I submitted an essay on torture I think at least a month ago...

Thanks again and all the best,

Jon

Now I have to argue with you, Jonathon. Like it or not, you are a very good writer, and this article is a gem -- clear, very well organized, and refreshingly literate. I especially like the fact that you deal so thoroughly with the arguments of those whose sanction the draft, something often lacking in Objectivist writings.

I think your writing is excellent: organized, clear and well-researched. Without commenting on the merit of your self-criticism, the very fact that you are able to go back and objectively look at your own material speaks well for your future as a writer.

I wept thinking about how much my life means to me while I was reading this article.

Thank you.
